Wet or electric underfloor heating?

KB Heating & Plumbing installs both types and will recommend the one that suits the room.

  • Wet underfloor heating runs warm water from your boiler or heat pump through pipe loops under the floor. It costs more to install but less to run, and suits larger areas such as a kitchen extension or a whole ground floor.
  • Electric underfloor heating uses thin heating mats under the floor finish. It is quicker and cheaper to fit but costs more to run, and suits smaller rooms such as a bathroom or en-suite.

Where underfloor heating works well in Cardiff homes

Underfloor heating is most often fitted in Cardiff when a floor is being replaced anyway:

  • Rear and side-return kitchen extensions on terraced houses in Roath, Canton, Cathays and Splott, where there is little wall space for radiators.
  • Open-plan ground floors, where radiators are hard to place.
  • Bathroom and en-suite renovations with tiled floors.
  • New builds and loft conversions.

It works best under tile and stone, which pass heat well. Engineered wood and some laminates and carpets can be used, within the flooring maker’s temperature limits.

How KB Heating & Plumbing installs underfloor heating

Every installation starts with a survey of the room, the floor build-up and the existing heating system. For a wet system, the steps are:

  1. Lay insulation boards to stop heat escaping downwards.
  2. Lay the pipe loops at the spacing the room needs.
  3. Connect the loops to a manifold with a mixing valve, so the floor runs at a lower temperature than the radiators.
  4. Connect the manifold to the boiler or heat pump circuit.
  5. Pressure test the pipework before the screed or floor goes down.
  6. Fill, balance each zone, and set up the room thermostats.

For electric systems, the mat is laid on insulation, tested before and after the floor finish goes down, and connected to its own thermostat by a qualified electrician. KB Heating & Plumbing works with your builder, floor fitter or tiler so each stage happens in the right order.

Underfloor heating installation cost in Cardiff

The cost depends on the system type, the floor area, the floor build-up, and whether the boiler needs any changes. After the survey, KB Heating & Plumbing gives a fixed quote covering design, materials and installation.

Underfloor heating FAQs

Will underfloor heating work with my boiler?

Usually, yes. A wet system connects to most modern boilers through a mixing manifold. The survey checks that the boiler has enough output for the extra area.

Can underfloor heating go in an existing floor?

Yes, using low-profile boards laid over the existing floor, which raise the floor height slightly. If the floor is being dug up anyway, a screed system is usually the better choice.

Do you repair underfloor heating too?

Yes. See underfloor heating repair in Cardiff.
